After 2.5 months of trying to locate the big bream on the big lake I finally found some willing to feed. The gutting thing was I couldn't stay an extra night as I had to attend my own 40th birthday party the next night. I just hope they are in the same area this weekend! After multiple bizarre incidents over the last couple of months I finally got an actual take that wasn't:
a heron flying through my line
an eel tangling hooklength, tubing and line into a marble sized ball
an eel shooting off around an h-block at 160m
a swan battle wiping out my rods
50+ cormorants charging through all 4 rods while rounding up the prey fish
a 20lb+ pike with 1.5lb eels in it's mouth, the eel wrapping itself around one of my lines at 30m while fishing at 160m
a dog jumping into the swim and wiping out a rod
It turned out to be a 17lb 1oz bream, new pb by 2lb 15oz, I followed that up with a lost fish an hour later and a smaller fish of 11lb 12oz an hour after that and was still getting liners when I packed up. Time to try and get one of the monsters Wink
11lb 12oz

In reply to Post #98 Well out on the river yesterday in persuit of my first barbel of the year, got there about 2.30pm, met my mate there so was in good company. Fishing was very hard due to the river been at its lowest and crystal clear. Had nothing on the meat so switched over to the pellet a few hours into the session. Sat making a hooklink when the rod wrapped round, fish on!! and judging by the fight I said to Ian "this is a barbel". It fought hard and certainly didn't want to leave its watery home. I was a very happy chappy and looked forward to getting this one on the unhooking mat as it felt like a good fish. Then my mate caught a glimpse of my quarry and said "its a carp". If I'm honest I have to say I was quite disheartened. It was my first ever river carp so that was a hidden bonus, but I would of rather it been a barbel, have to admire it for the fight it gave though, thank you Mr Carp....
8lb 4oz

In reply to Post #68 Bream are a good pike bait but not up there in my favourite choices tbh.
Where their common in the venue I've seen many a big pike slam into the shoal which must look like an all you can eat free buffet to the pike. Those big silver sides can been seen a mile off but they don't last long as live baits and are good at playing dead after a few minutes which is not what you really want. Still, Sean had one pike in the margins that only took when the bream made a feable attempt at escaping so he would have caught it much sooner with a fully kicking lively!
8oz trout - now thats the baby

In reply to Post #35 Well,
What a result!!
Tipped up at my local park lake today around 11am set out for catching pike! had 2 pike in total both on ledgered deads.....
I decided to move about 3pm and whilst sat down, thought id use up the half pint of white maggots I had left to see if I could get a cheeky livebait!
Then, to my left I could see bubbling fish and swirls......on closer investigation saw several large carp feasting!
With my match rod, 2lb bottom and 18 hook baited with 2 white maggots I cast over them and wound back......around a minute later the float sailed away and I hooked into a breezeblock of a fish( which steamed off in the other direction.....I knew I couldn't pressure the fish as I was set up to catch roach and skimmers!
After a few minutes the fish was in the edge, not particularly tired I knew this was my opportunity to try and net the fish.....I slipped the net under her before she probably even knew she was hooked and I knew it was a good fish! Called my mate to come and take pics as I new this was a new british PB for me in the shape of a 23lb 8oz Mirror! I was well happy with this result!

In reply to Post #20 shaun next time out try some cockles
great carp bait that the tench in my waters simple adore to the fact that i dont use them anymore
|
|
|
In reply to Post #19 On this particular water paddy the tench have a taste for them prawns. sweetcorn and maggots are a no no for defo. when someone walks round for a chat i switch to corn to fool them into thinking corn is the way! lol, the carp on this water are extremely fussing with what they will take and leave so i don't bother with them as i like targeting the tench at this time of year, i will return a week wednesday for one last session before the river season opens as i would love to hit the 200lb mark but i will take two 13ft keepnets to help me out a bit! lol. (missing the thurne system face!)

In reply to Post #16 It was a good day on that particular water paddy pike, the tench had been a little slow leading up to it but they soon came on the feed! float fished prawn just off the bottom was the key on the day, was a joy on my 13ft powercurve!
