Well I just got back from a couple of hours on the local canal. Walked up one way on the ondex, no joy at all, back to the car on a little shakespeare plug and had one little tiddler. My mate didn't so much better either. The ondex has a bloody nice movement through the water, I'd have bitten it!!!!

Broke the tip of my rod with some spectacularly bad casting!!! That's why I bought a cheap rod to get the hang of it with!!!

without doubt one of the biggest pike i have seen was caught on an ondex size 6 (not by me but a mate)even to this day it still dwarfs 99'9% of pike i have seen, even in books dvds and so on

Have just picked up an Ondex size 6. Going to try to get out this evening and give it a go. Do they sit quite high in the water? The canal is pretty weedy is my concern?

I have probably caught more pike on Ondex spinners in my life than all the rest put together!

Straight retrieve with the spinner bait works fine. The blades vibrate slowly through the water i saw my 20 take it just below the surface. The Ondex spinner is very good too and both can be used in shallow water. here's one:

Cheers for the advice, I will give spinner baits ago. I bought a wide selection of lures, most of them sank to deep for the weedy canal I was fishing so used a 2 inch jack lure which worked a treat!

With the spinnerbait do you retrieve steadily or vary a bit?

Hi Paul,

Sounds like you have the fishing bug again and you can have many hours enjoying lure fishing. Slow moving rivers are ideal or try the calmer sections of a fast flowing river. Big pike will often sit close to the bank so stand well back when first approaching a swim and don't be too surprised to find a pike take the lure right at the end of the retrieve. Which makes the heart pound a bit

I have found with lure fishing that the time of day can be as important as the location. My favourite time is the two hours before darkness on most waters and if you haven't tried this yet - give it a go as this is when most people have left for the day and the bigger pike go on the prowl
My best session was 19 fish in two hours on my favourite lure

Sounds like you have a lure that works well and another one thats worth trying is a spinnerbait which I have had a 20.12 fish just a the sun was setting. Good luck

Ray

Just got into fishing in any respect! Used to coarse fish when I was a kid but lost interest as soon as i found boobs and booze. The novelty of them has worn off after 20 years so I thought I'd get back into fishing. Planning to do a bit of method feeder fishing and a lot more pike fishing!

I only have a really light weight 7ft spinning rod and the smallest reel i could find in Taunton! Can't believe It coped so easily with such a large Pike!

Would like to try dead baiting at some stage but haven't got the right rod for it yet.

Hi there,

I last week decided to start lure fishing for Pike on a whim. not done any fishing for over a decade and thought I would give it a go. It seemed to be a good way of getting some peace and quiet. went out on the Taunton-Bridgwater canal last night, not expecting much from my first trip. Boy was I wrong!! 6 Jack Pike and two Pike in 2 hours fishing!!! One day lure fishing and I caught a 10 1/2 Lb Pike.

Just wanted to know if I can expect these results regularly round here and what other waters are good for Pike fishing?

Am tempted to try the River Tone on the levels but don't know whether big wide slow rivers are good for Pike fishing??

Thanks

Paul
